Overview

Muscat • Bimmah • Wadi Shab • Sur • Wadi Bani Khalid • Sharqiyah Sands • Nizwa • Jabrin • Bahla • Al Hamra • Misfat Al Abriyeen • Jebel Shams • Wadi Bani Awf • Bilad Sayt • Daymaniyat Islands

The perfect grand journey for a first discovery of Oman.

Few destinations can shift scenery so dramatically in just a few hours. In Oman, a day can begin facing the ocean, continue in the turquoise waters of a wadi, and end in the heart of the desert. The next day, dunes give way to forts, palm groves, and then the great Hajar Mountains.

Oman, Between Sands & Summits is built around these contrasts. Over eight days, this private tour brings together the environments that give the Sultanate its unique character without turning each day into a race against the clock.

You will discover Muscat and its cultural heritage, follow the eastern coast to Wadi Shab and Sur, explore the waters of Wadi Bani Khalid, and then the dunes of the Sharqiyah Sands. Inland, you will visit Nizwa, Jabrin, and Bahla before reaching the ancient villages of Al Hamra and Misfat Al Abriyeen.

Then comes the mountain. At Jebel Shams, the cliffs of Wadi Nakhar open onto one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in the country. The next day, a 4x4 crossing through Wadi Bani Awf and Bilad Sayt gradually leads back to Muscat.

Finally, after mountains and desert, the journey ends at sea with an excursion to the Daymaniyat Islands. A complete first discovery of Oman: cultural, natural, active, and deeply immersive.

Mountains back to the sea.

Itinerary

1Day 1 — Muscat
Between contemporary elegance and Omani heritage. Welcome to the Sultanate of Oman. Meet and greet at Muscat International Airport and private transfer to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time and opening hours, begin exploring the capital. Visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque when possible. Its architectural lines, gardens, and interior spaces make it one of the city’s iconic landmarks. Continue to old Muscat. Enjoy exterior views of Al Alam Palace and the historic forts overlooking the bay. Then head to Mutrah. Stroll along the Corniche before winding through the souk’s narrow alleys. Frankincense, textiles, silverware, spices, and handicrafts offer a first glimpse into the country’s trading traditions. Return to your hotel. Overnight in Muscat.
2Day 2 — Muscat • Bimmah • Wadi Shab • Sur
The great eastern coastal road. After breakfast, depart for the eastern coast. The Hajar mountains gradually accompany the road as the Gulf of Oman appears on the horizon. First stop at Bimmah Sinkhole, a natural cavity famous for its turquoise-colored waters. Continue to Wadi Shab. A short boat crossing takes you to the start of the trail. Then begin a hike through a canyon flanked by high limestone cliffs. Palm trees, rocky terraces, and natural pools alternate along the route. The aquatic part is optional. For confident swimmers, it’s possible to swim further to the inner pools when conditions allow. Sturdy shoes suitable for uneven terrain are recommended. After this nature break, continue to Sur. This historic maritime town facing the Indian Ocean remains closely linked to traditional dhows and Oman’s historic sea routes. Explore the city as time permits. In the evening, you may add an organized visit to Ras Al Jinz to try spotting marine turtles. Wildlife sightings naturally cannot be guaranteed. Overnight in Sur or Ras Al Hadd, depending on your chosen package.
3Day 3 — Sur • Wadi Bani Khalid • Sharqiyah Sands
From oasis to desert. After breakfast, you gradually leave the coast and head inland. Arrive at Wadi Bani Khalid, where the mineral landscape suddenly opens onto an oasis of palm trees, falajs, and natural pools. Leisurely stroll at your own pace. When conditions allow and in permitted areas, you can swim. Lunch in the region. Then another change of scenery. Travel to Bidiyah, the gateway to the Sharqiyah Sands. Your 4x4 leaves the main road and gradually heads into the dunes. Settle into your camp. Late afternoon, depart for the high dunes to watch the sunset. Return to camp for dinner and an evening under the stars. Overnight in the Sharqiyah Sands.
4Day 4 — Sharqiyah Sands • Nizwa • Jabrin • Bahla
From dunes to interior history. Option to witness sunrise before breakfast. Then depart for Nizwa. For centuries, this city was one of the major political, religious, and commercial centers of Oman’s interior. Visit Nizwa Fort and its famous circular tower. Then explore the traditional souk. Dates, halwa, pottery, jewelry, khanjars, and local products still reflect the city’s importance in regional trade. Continue to Jabrin. Visit its 17th-century castle, remarkable for its architecture, ornate ceilings, and the layout of its rooms. Pass through the Bahla region. Depending on the day’s pace, enjoy exterior views or visit its impressive fortified complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Return to the Nizwa area. Overnight in Nizwa.
5Day 5 — Nizwa • Al Hamra • Misfat Al Abriyeen • Jebel Shams
Ancient villages and Oman’s Grand Canyon. Depart westward toward the Hajar massif. First stop in Al Hamra, an old town with several examples of traditional earthen architecture. Continue to Misfat Al Abriyeen. This village clings to the mountainside above a palm oasis fed by ancient falaj systems. Wander its alleys and gardens. This stop offers a more intimate glimpse into rural Oman. Then the road gradually climbs to Jebel Shams, the Sultanate’s highest point and gateway to some of the most spectacular Hajar landscapes. Arrive on the heights overlooking Wadi Nakhar. From various viewpoints, admire the vast canyon walls, often called Oman’s “Grand Canyon.” For active travelers, depending on arrival time and group level, there’s the option of a short hike on mountain trails. Settle into your accommodation. End the day facing the canyon’s rugged terrain. Overnight at Jebel Shams.
6Day 6 — Jebel Shams • Wadi Bani Awf • Bilad Sayt • Nakhal • Muscat
The great Hajar crossing. After breakfast, embark on one of the circuit’s most adventurous days. Your 4x4 descends from the massif heights onto the tracks of Wadi Bani Awf. The route crosses a mineral world of deep valleys, cliffs, mountain trails, and isolated villages. This crossing requires a suitable vehicle and experienced driver. In the heart of the massif lies Bilad Sayt, a village surrounded by mountains and terraced fields, one of the day’s most photogenic stops. Time to explore, then continue descending to the Batinah plain. Depending on conditions, track state, and group pace, a stop is possible near Nakhal and its springs. Continue to Muscat. Return to your hotel’s comfort after a big mountain day. Overnight in Muscat.
7Day 7 — The Daymaniyat Islands
Oman from the sea. After several days among wadis, desert, and mountains, the tour’s final major experience takes place on the water. Transfer to the departure port. Boat trip to the Daymaniyat Islands Nature Reserve. Off Muscat, these rocky islets are surrounded by clear waters, reefs, and rich marine biodiversity. Depending on conditions, multiple snorkeling sessions reveal underwater scenery. Tropical fish, reefs, and turtles may be seen, though sightings are not guaranteed. The excursion operates under reserve rules and is subject to permits and sea conditions. A light snack or lunch is included, depending on your outing package. Return to Muscat by early or mid-afternoon. An intentionally free afternoon follows. The rest of the day is unprogrammed. After a week of discoveries, this time allows you to slow down. Pool, beach, spa, shopping, Mutrah, or simply rest at the hotel. In the evening, an optional farewell dinner by the sea can be arranged. Overnight in Muscat.
8Day 8 — Muscat
Final moments in the Sultanate. Breakfast. Depending on your flight time, free time in Muscat. Private transfer to the international airport. Departure assistance. End of the journey.
